Keeping Up with the Joneses

You've got to keep up with the Joneses
Everyone's got to try,
For years I've heard this saying
And for years I've wondered why?

Maybe the Jones who started it all
Was a very clever bloke,
Or had a sense of humour
And said it for a joke.

We've all seen Maureen Lipman
Do her advert on T.V.
"If it's not good enough for Mrs. Jones
It's not good enough for me".

So if you can tell me the origin
(It probably started in Wales)
Of the saying "Keep up etc",
And all that it entails,

You could help me solve the mystery
Of why it should be so.
Why not keep up with the Browns
And numerous Smiths we know?

For after years of struggling
And trying to get ahead,
I couldn't keep up with the Joneses
So I married one instead!
