Photos from the North of England

This is a selection of photos from Holy Island, Alnwick Castle,(pronounced Annick) Bamburgh Castle (pronounced Bamborough) and Seahouses.

The White Swan Hotel The White Swan Hotel is a wonderful place to stay. It is right in the heart of Alnwick, only a ten minute walk from the Castle. We spent the weekend here and took day trips to the coastal areas.

This is the entrance to Alnwick Castle, and the lion which stands on the bridge guarding the Castle. Unfortunately the Castle was not open the day we visited so we couldn't go inside.

The following four photos were taken on Holy Island. This island used to be known as Lindisfarne when I was in school. It was the place where Christianity was first introduced to England. At low tide you can drive out to Holy Island.
We all fell in love with Simon, the old horse who pulled the taxi. Cars can only go as far as the car park, then you walk or take the taxi into town. Town consists of one cobbled street with individiual, unique little shops. Fast food places, and the usual tourist attractions, are not allowed here. The island is protected by the National Trust and it is like stepping back in time when you visit it.

Our next stop was Bamburgh Castle. This is one of the best preserved Castles and sits right on the coast. It has been modernized but still retains it's original charm.
